Essay in progress

L’Anatomie de la Fracture

Réginald Surin

What is described as a Haitian collapse is a condition held in place. Armed violence, monetary failure, the incapacity of the state, and the reproduction of inequality are not four separate crises that happened to meet by accident: they are manifestations of a single structure, one that produces its own elites, its own equilibria, and its own reasons to endure. The essay lays out its anatomy, with the tools of economics and without falling back on the thesis of fate.

Where this book comes from

The 54 “Autopsie” columns are its raw material and its testing ground. Each one isolates a mechanism: price formation when external channels no longer explain inflation, the selection of recruits when a highly competitive entrance exam guarantees nothing, the architecture of an armed coalition when game theory reveals its fault lines. The book puts them back together.
